Two days later, once I had formulated a plan, mentally rehearsed my script, and mustered the courage, I was a woman on a mission.

My mother’s old office was officially Elijah’s now. The last of her belongings had been removed, and Elijah’s keen intellect dismantled the magical lock left behind on the doorway, allowing the janitorial staff to finally enter and prepare the room for him. The golden plaque bearing the name Dr. Elena Quinlan had been removed from the door but had yet to be replaced by one inscribed with Dr. Elijah Kang.

It was painful to witness the changes, but it was necessary. I doubted my mother intended to cause that much trouble with her enchanted barrier, sealed with her own blood, and therefore only allowing those of her own bloodline to pass through. She didn’t know she was going to die.

It was midmorning. The sky was overcast, and the brief pattern of warmth had faded back into the old unforgiving winter chill. It was always like that this time of year. Mother Nature joked around, teasing us with hints of spring. Even those of us who knew that true spring wouldn’t come until May fell victim to her tricks every once in a while.

I marched into the necromancy department’s building without hesitation, nodding hello to the scattering of staff and students I passed on the way to the second floor. I was determined to keep going, swallow my pride, and do what needed to be done to get some answers.

The door to his office was open. I paused at the threshold and tapped on the doorframe to get his attention. His back was to me as he stood at one of the windows, gazing out at the snowy campus quietly. He jumped when he heard the sound of my knocking and whirled around.

“Everly. Hi. Pardon me. Were you standing there for long? Sometimes I can get so lost in my own thoughts,” he babbled with a bashful smile on his face. Even when he was caught off guard, he was endearing.

“No, it’s okay,” I told him. “Do you have a minute?”

“For you? I have all the minutes in the world.”

My heart thrummed at the lighthearted flirtation.

He would say something like that to anyone, I reminded myself. Focus.

“Do you mind if I close the door?” I asked.

The way his expression shifted from delight to surprise with flickers of something akin to hope underneath the surface made me want to turn and run. We needed privacy so that I could ask him all about Awena without being interrupted or overheard, but I knew what it sounded like to his ears when an old flame stormed into his office and asked for a minute of seclusion with him.

“Of course,” he murmured. “No problem.”

I closed the door and then claimed the same seat that was still there from when I used to visit my mother. He hadn’t rearranged anything yet. The desk was still in the same place, as were the filing cabinets. There were piles of boxes stacked in the corner, seemingly untouched.
